Greenpeace is searching for the next group of environmental leaders. Do you know a student who is passionate about tackling global warming, stopping deforestation, and saving the whales with Greenpeace? Maybe it's you!We are accepting applications for the Summer and Fall 2010 semesters of the Greenpeace Organizing Term

The Greenpeace Organizing Term is an action-packed semester and the best hands-on training available to give students the skills to build the environmental movement.While in the program, students learn grassroots organizing, media, direct action, and campaign strategy so they can run successful campaigns back on campus. Best of all, students will put those new skills into practice by working on actual Greenpeace campaigns in the field!Candidates must be 18-24 years of age and either a high school senior or an undergraduate at a college or university to apply. Here is a link to the Student Project List ERC has compiled of all the environmental projects going on on campus. So if you want to participate in a project contact the person in charge of that project. This prevents similar projects from going on at the same time and encourages collaboration between student organizations.

Farm City

Does meeting with fellow students and faculty to talk about running a farm in the ghettos of Oakland, dumpster diving to feed pigs, and corralling runaway turkeys in downtown Oakland sound like fun?

During the Spring term Green Roots and the Environmental Studies program will be sponsoring a for credit campus read program. The book is Farm City: The Education of an Urban Farmer, by Novella Carpenter. Her work covers topics including sustainable agriculture, urban communities, and healthful eating. As a special treat, the author will be in the Fox Cities in mid-April, just before Earth Day!

Please consider registering for one of the "ENST 320: Farm City: A community read" sections for this spring
Below are some important details:

Course Number: ENST 320
There are no prerequisites, this is not just for ENST students, so encourage your friends to sign up with you!
1 unit, S/U only grading
No writing requirement or exams
Classes will meet once per week for 1 hour for the first 5 weeks of the term.
There are 8 sections for you to choose from, all meeting at different times. So you have your choice of times and instructors.

ORC Speaker

ORC is bringing in a good friend of Dan Miles who has been a professional
river guide in the Grand Canyon, and has been on almost every other
river worth running in the western US. He currently guides scientists
down there so they can do research.

He also helped PBS make a documentary about John W. Powell, the first
person to explore that part of the country.

He'll be on campus to talk on Monday Feb 22nd at 8pm in the Hurvis
Room, 2nd floor, of the WCC. Please stop in and listen to some great
stories and what it's like working as a guide.

Andrew Knudsen, co-chair of the Green Roots committee, signed us up for RPN (responsible purchasing network). Anyone at LU can access their resources through our membership, which runs until 2/1/2011. Follow the link above to access their sight and set up your individual account.

This website provides a lot of good information about any sort of 'green' purchasing policies, and even have pre-made purchasing policies for universities.

Any one interested in trying to pass more legislation with LUCC should sign up.

- Surveys before Cinema Movies -
Subcommittee Needed!! Please come to the meetings if you would liek to get involved with collecting data about student usage of the environment and getting more students concerned and involved about Green Society!

Subcommittee Tasks;
-rent clickers for cinema questions
-collaborate and create quick questionnaires for students to answer while waiting for their movie to start
-**compile gathered data into a format to be presented in previews before showings, and perhaps elsewhere on campus

Plans for New Garden

OMA and SLUG are currently working on reserving the lot next to Greenfire and the Diversity Center for a vegetable/herb garden, potentially to include flowers and an aesthetic design for diverse music groups that like to practice on that lot.

Hopefully we can get the permission and start in the Spring! :-)

What went on this week with the ERC?

1. Big Topics;
Vince Dyer (co-chair)has put together a Student Project List of all projects that are done, currently in progress, or potentially will be on campus.

Also, Vince is looking at the small triangular shaped roof on 4th floor Briggs to do a potential greenroof, however, plans have been put aside due to prior claim of that roof for a Japanese Zen Garden.

The Environmental Responsibility Committee (ERC) is a standing committee of Lawrence University Community Council(LUCC). We aim to promote understanding and awareness of environmental responsibility within the Lawrence community.
